Question: Do Hospice Patients Need Flu Shots?
Many hospice patients and their caregivers wonder whether or not they should get flu shots. Why bother getting a vaccine when you have terminal illness?
Answer:

The flu shot is now indicated for everyone over the age of 6 months old without severe egg allergies. Anyone with a terminal illness that is in hospice care should get the flu vaccine to prevent further complications from the illness and generally to avoid feeling worse.

Dr. Georgina Peacock at the CDC has this to say about hospice patients and flu shots: "Flu symptoms are unpleasant and getting pneumonia and complications of the flu can be really unpleasant. Getting the flu on top of whatever condition you have will make you feel worse."

Can Hospice Patients Get the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine?

According to Dr. Peacock, "If they are in hospice care, you would want them to get the injectable form of the vaccine instead of the nasal spray." This is because the nasal spray is not recommended for people with weakened immune systems, since it is made from a weakened live virus instead. The flu shot, meanwhile, is made from a killed influenza virus and is safe for those with weakened immune systems.

If you aren't sure about whether the flu vaccine is right for you or your loved one in hospice care, talk to your health care provider or hospice nurse. Because they know your specific condition, they will be able to help you determine what the benefits and risks may be.
