Definition:
Bacteria are single-celled, microscopic organisms that are all around us. There are many different types of bacteria, many of which are harmless.
Bacteria live in our bodies and even help keep us healthy by digesting our food and fighting other disease-causing organisms.
There are some other types of bacteria, however, that do cause illnesses. Among other things, bacteria are responsible for:
- strep throat
- Salmonella
- Certain types of pneumonia
- Some ear infections
