Influenza B on the Rise

By March 25, 2013

Follow me on:

Flu activity is declining in the United States. We are not seeing the widespread outbreaks of flu that we saw in December and January. However, the CDC made an important announcement this week about the current state of flu activity. During most of this flu season, the strain that was dominant was influenza A H3N2. However, now the CDC says that the type of influenza that is causing most illnesses now is a strain of influenza B.

This is significant because the influenza B strain that has caused a lot of illness this year was not well matched to the strain of influenza B that was included in this year's flu vaccine.

Just because flu season is winding down doesn't mean you should let your guard down. I still hear from people every day who have come down with the flu and it is no mild illness. Make sure you are taking steps to protect yourself.
