Nonproductive Cough

Definition:

A non productive cough is one that is either dry or does not bring up any mucous.

Non productive coughs tend to be caused by irritation in the throat or swelling in the airways caused by conditions such as asthma or bronchitis.

If you cough and it brings up mucous or congestion, that is considered a productive cough.
