Should You Take Tamiflu?

By February 17, 2013

If you get the flu, you may hear people tell you that you should take Tamiflu. You may think it will help you get over your symptoms faster, make your symptoms less severe or reduce your risk of developing a secondary infection. It can also be used by people who are at high risk for flu complications to prevent getting the flu if they are exposed to someone that has it. But it isn't right for everyone and has certain side effects that you should be aware of.

There is also some speculation that it may not be quite as effective as the manufacturer claims that it is given the fact that they have not been willing to share all of the results of the studies that have been conducted on it.

However, at this point it is one of only two antiviral medications available in the US that actually works against the influenza virus (the other is Relenza) and it's the best option we have for most people. Find out more about antiviral medications and see if Tamiflu is right for you.
