Flu Symptoms 2012

By , About.com GuideJanuary 3, 2012

Follow me on:

A new year is upon us again and with it comes another flu season. Typical flu seasons peak sometime in February or March and it appears this year will be no exception. It is the first week of January and we are still seeing only sporadic flu activity around most of the country but it will most likely start to increase in the next few weeks. Do you have 2012 flu symptoms?

For those who have already come down with the flu, symptoms in 2012 are much like those of past flu season. Flu Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Exhaustion/Fatigue
  • Body Aches
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Congestion

Symptoms typically hang on for about a week, but can last longer. Read more: How Long Does the Flu Last?

Although it may seem like every illness you get this winter is the flu, that really isn't the case. There are many other viruses and germs out there that can and do make us sick, especially during cold and flu season. If your symptoms are very different from those listed above, you probably don't have influenza ("the flu").

You can also read about how the flu has affected real people this flu season and last over at Flu Symptoms 2011.

Think you have the flu? Share your symptoms and experiences.

The flu is a serious illness and not something you should blow off as just a bad cold. Even though we are closing in on peak flu season, it's not too late to get the vaccine if you haven't already. It takes about two weeks to be effective, but will be worth the time if it helps keep you healthy this year.

31 yr old male, NJ picked it from a colleague. Started off with mild sore throat, mild dry cough with a lot of desire to cough (no stuffy nose, no congestion or any cold). Took nyquil for two nights to relieve body aches and mild fever at night, and then went to doctor. Due to important work constraints, could not ideally stop working and just get rest and follow few home remedies for these probably viral infections to go away on their own until the fourth day. Doctor recommended zythromycin antibiotics after trying Delsym for a day for the cough without a lot of mucus. Delsym caused me watery diarrhea (probably due to over load on my liver due to nyquil and lot of beans – proteins?) and cough changed to productive yellow mucus after taking Delsym. Stopped Delsym on fifth day and although hate to take antibiotics as they are not supposed to be taken for cold, cough, flue but took them anyways. Phelgm turned slightly red indicating blood and cough remains? My mystery remains, planning to try some popular online home remedies for cough on weekend. Conclusion: take flu shots if you are not active, do not eat heatlhy, and do not have strong body, immune system otherwise typically flu, cold are body’s natural way of getting rid of old cells and should go away with rest.

Went to bed Sun night feeling fine, awakened 4am by monster headache. Within few hours also had body aches, chills, dizziness and some nausea. Worked AM, slept/rested rest of day. Lots of Tylenol and fluids. Awakened @ 3am today by monster headache, but dizziness is gone. Able to work a 1/2 day, but symptoms worse (thankfully dizziness hasn’t returned). Hoping tomorrow will be better. As much rest, Tylenol and fluids as possible until recovered!

PS I did get a flu shot and do so every year. My husband’s a day behind me symptom-wise, and he also gets flu shots. Hopefully, our symptoms will be milder and shorter in duration

Mine started on Monday with a sore throat and body aches. I went to school, figuring it was just my allergies and that it would go away. But right when I got home, I started to feel worse. By then, I had a headache with the body aches and the sore throat. But no temperature until about 9 that night. It was only around 101. I stayed home from school Tuesday, feeling a little bit better. I had no temperature. That morning, the headache wasn’t as bad, and the body aches were gone. My sore throat still stayed. And also, nasal congestion began. Now it is Wednesday, and I’m once again staying home from school. My sore throat is STILL here, along with the congestion. I can feel mucus in my throat and it is difficult to talk or swallow. I checked my tonsils and the back of my throat for white spots, checking for Strep, but I don’t. So now, I’m wondering if it is still the influenza or if I do have Strep or laryngitis. ): Ugh…

42 y/o female. My 14 yr old daughter had symptoms on Sunday. Mine began 24hrs later, basically the same. Rapid onset, fever 102-103. Chills. Sudden constant clear sinus drainage/drip. Frequent mostly non productive cough. Occasional thick yellow/whitish mucous expectorated. She’s going on day 5, i’m going on day 4, into the flu. We both continue to have intermittent fever. We both have really poor appetite. Everything tastes bad, including warm teas, with honey and lemon. Neither of us have eaten really. Extreme fatigue, activity intolerance. Nausea. I’m almost 3 times her age. I have pain in my chest and abdomen, mostly when i cough. She said she does not, with her cough. I have no idea how long this is going to last, like i said, we’re on day 4 and 5. :(

I’m 29 and this is day 3 and all I’ve had is lack of appetite and dirreah. My son however is 4 and a half and he’s on day 15 of having flu symptoms. He’s had a very tough time, however when I took him to the emergency room they didn’t think he had the flu because he was so alert. He barely eats and gets sick at pretty much anything so don’t force him to eat and the doctor gave us medicine that obvious tastes gross and makes my son get sick. I’m at a loss, I have not idea what else I can do for my son. :(

Started with a sore throat and fatigue. Next day was more fatigue with frequent bowel movements and headache. Then the sneezing and watery eyes with congestion. Cough was mild and infrequent. Two more days of major congestion. Thought I was almost feeling better but major headache and fatigue all day today! When will this go away!

Flu started 5 days ago. Started just before I wanted to go to sleep, a really high fever and chills began following with body aches, couldn’t sleep and started taking extra strength tylenol. Felt just terrible for the next 3 days with my head feeling like a bowling ball, fever and chills, body aches and nausea. Couldn’t eat much, just drink water and had popsicles. Not to mention I’m 7 weeks pregnant and having a fever that went over 100 :( ! The 3rd day chest congestion sets in and a persistent dry couch that burns my chest and throat when I cough, I went to the doctors, he said there’s nothing he could perscribe me and that its the flu and it can go for 2 weeks. On the fourth day fever starts to break and chest congestion becomes more painful and dry cough continues. 5th day still coughing really hard and my chest is feeling really painful. I’ve been up coughing almost all night. Might go and get a second opinion as chest pain feels as bad as bronchitis even though the doctor said its the flu..?

UGH flu!!!! last week I went to Florida for a business trip (left on Wednesday) and within a couple of hours of getting off the plane I had an intense headache… I ignored it… then came the dizziness and nausea about three days later (Saturday)… It was a short trip so I was home by then thus it seems that it took about 3 days to really hook me. Dizziness and nausea took over Saturday, I felt feverish and had some chills and then the body aches and exhaustion started with the addition of a cough and wicked sore throat (Sunday/Monday). I have little desire to get out of bed, I feel so crapy I just wanna cry, and at this point, a week later on Wednesday, I feel like I have been hit by a bus so much so that my back teeth even hurt. I tend not to call the doctor but I did call this morning begging for relief. I have been taking advil and that has helped with the body pains, I am thinking about heading out for some tylenol inspired by those of you who are also suffering this this evil flu demon…

I hope you all feel better!

38 year old male from West New York, NJ.

I was perfectly fine for a ski trip to Plattekill, Ny on saturday, and for Church on Sunday. As a matter of fact went to bed at normal time (aka 1 am) feeling perfect. Then Monday I woke up to 16 missed calls(and 16 vm) 11 text messages, at around 3pm. I had slept thru my alarm and my phone blowing up.
I woke with a splitting head ache and no energey I just call my boss and curled up under the blanket for another 15 hrs. When I finaly came out of my “coma sleep” I had the dryiest mouth, when I went to get a drink I found I could not swallow! My tounge and throat where swollen and soar.. I could not sleep any more so I started checking all my vm and text. Now its Friday and after 5 days of chills, headaches, fever, soar thoat, loss of energey, and not wanting to eat(or better put not able to eat) I feel a bit better. Still hard to swollow dew to tounge but it is alot better than before…. AND as I type this I find out everyone at my office have this flu… ahhh go away for good!

You think that’s bad! (ha,Ha) Started with a wicked sore throat . then severe chills, couldn’t get warm. No appetite, headache.. Then just in a fog with no energy, tried Mucinex, coughed until I was exhausted, and slept for a long time. Just got worse from there for a few days . took Coricidin HP syrup (has tylenol) and slept pretty well . Since then have been blowing my nose like crazy, coughing, still no appetite, , weak and really depressed. This is the 8th day and I am just starting to feel better.

home remedies…
Garlic. Garlic. Garlic. you can buy it in pill form or eat the real thing. take four pills the minute you feel the symptoms coming on. then take 2 more every 4-6 hours.
onions work too. but it is harder to eat onions and stinkier. the pill form of garlics doesn’t smell or make you smell. it also keeps mosquitoes by the way.
also try zinc and vit. c. WITH Garlic!

these things will NOT cure it. but it can shorten the length and lessen the symptoms of the flu and colds.

(17) Trish says:

Same here. Started out of nowhere last Saturday (2/4) with a sore throat. About 30 minutes later I notice my teeth were hurting. Soon after that a massive headache begam. Sunday more of the same, and by Monday morning I had terrible stomach issues and couldn’t go to work. At this point add in sinus pressure & congestion, coughing, and runny nose (clear), then eye and throat itchiness. Sore every a.m. and comes and goes throughout the day, and usually the same with the headaches as well. Felt worse by Friday (2/10), and finally to the doctor that day. He said it was a bad case of the flu. Slept through most of this past weekend. Now it’s Tuesday and it took hours to get out of bed this morning. The runny nose/itchy eyes/cough/sneezing/stuffiness are mostly gone, but the sore throat and feeling of needing more rest is strong as well as the pressure in the back of my sinues. And this is day 11 for me.

Last night ( Tuesday ) I had gone out with my wife for valentines dinner. I was feeling good all day n even thru dinner. However, shortly after getting back home I felt like i had ran thru a meat grinder! My whole body hurt and had really bad chills followed by mild dizziness n headache. I took my temp and was 100.1. I took nyquil, ibuprofen and went to bed. I awoke around 830 am some dizziness but no fever n some soreness still. Is this the beginning of my flu adventure?

Its been 5 days and my chest feels like someone is sitting on it..im running into things because im off balaned..head and body aches…fever and iritability and did i mention my stomach!?
the weird thing is i haven’t coughed or had a runny nose at all? Maybe for the first few days my nose felt stuffed tho….

However …when i stand up and walk around all the colour rushes from my face and i feel like im going to fall down!? What a doosie!
Does anyone else feel like this…oh and note to all do not be as in denial about being sick as me; i painted my bathroom because i didnt want to feel lazy…an hour after i finished i was laying down for almost 24 hrs because i had over exherted myself… i hope this is the flu and not something worse!!!

(21) Maria says:

I am 38. Three days ago, I woke up with a minor sore throat and chest congestion. I ignored these symptoms and two days ago I volunteered in my daughter’s kindergarten class. That usually wipes me out anyway, but this knocked me out! The next day, yesterday, I called in sick to work. I was achy, had chest pain from congestion, and headache, but not from sinus pressure. I had zero energy and slept the whole day. Oddly, I had no fever. Tylenol did not help, but my dad’s old fake fever trick (hot water bottle on chest/throat and lower back) seemed to help. Strangely, I could feel the virus moving down my body from chest to my gastrointestines where it is today. Very uncomfortable and, well, my family is feeling it, or should I say smelling it?! I hope its out of my feet tomorrow!

Anyway, this is the second time I’ve had these kinds of symptoms (no energy, achy, chest congestion, intestinal discomfort, but no fever) that didn’t seem to be the ususal flu symptoms.

(22) nurse says:

Hmmm…had flu jab, a requirement for my role as district nurse. On annual leave…two days in felt back ache, headache with eye ache. Dry cough…hacking with phlegm seeming stuck mid chest….ow it hurts to cough…increased breaths…cough…blood due to continous coughing…high temp…no appetite…. Annual leave over in two days…..should be right as rain then….typical. My advice to you all….rest….fluids….paracetamol….if you feel you need to see a dr phone first…ask to have a telephone consultation….your dr will ask you relevant questions and see you if you need help….otherwise stay in if you can. This flu feels like death to me….but may mean death to others…those with low immune systems…pregnant women..the elderly…the young…those who are vulnerable. If you do go outside please bear these people in mind. X :-D It’s a serious illness :’(

(23) Lianne says:

The flu came on suddenly around Wednesday. I was exhausted after work (came home at 4:30) and slept the rest of the evening… Wasn’t sure why I felt so bad. Woke up at around 2am with a horrible sore throat and didn’t sleep well the rest of the night. I toughed work out the next day on Thursday but everything went down-hill from there. The throat got even worse and my temperature got up to 102 degrees in the evening. No appetite, severe body aches and shivering chills and I slept from 4:30 again all the way until morning (with the help of medicine). With still a bad throat and dizziness, my fever went away to around 98 and I went back to work the next day. It returned to around 99.5 and I felt horrible because every time I bent down/ sat up my head would pound in pain and I’d get a dizzy spell. Maybe because my ears were all plugged up and painful too. I went home early around 2 and slept until 7ish. Lots of liquids and light food, and only laying around, really… Exhaustion, dizziness, headache, sore throat, fever, loss of appetite is really getting to me. I’ve tried tea and airborne and pain medication. Thank goodness it’s Friday!!!

(24) LadyQ says:

I am pretty sure I have the flu. 33 and in good health. Eat right, exercise. But I still get the flu. Mine started with a headache and body aches…and just not feeling right. But last night I knew I had the flu when at 8 pm I didn’t want to eat supper (and hadn’t eaten since 1 pm). I usually keep a good appetite, so THIS was very unusual for me. I listened to my body. I took a long hot bath after taking some Ibuprofen and Benadryl. Went to bed by 9 pm. Woke up every 4 hours as the Benadryl wore off. Would take Tylenol or Ibuprofen with the Benadryl every 4 hours so I could sleep through the body aches, headache and chills. When I did sleep I slept HARD because of the Benadryl ( I take 3 tsp of Children’s liquid becuase it seems to work faster/better for me) So I think the hard sleep really gave my body the rest it needs. I woke up this morning still feeling a little achey and tired. I have a little nasal congestion but no coughing. A mild headache. Seems like the Benadryl is also helping with the nasal stuff. Going to rest the next few days and not overexert myself. Drink lots of fluids and eat light. I still have enough energy to do laundry and take care of the kids. Maybe this will be short lived for me! Hope you all bounce back quickly!

(25) Lynn says:

My 14 year old son started with aches and fatigue last Sunday (2/12). Monday am he woke with a low grade temp 100.2 a bad sore throat and the sniffles, so I kept him home from school. All day Monday and Tuesday he continued to complain of a sore throat, aches, and had either normal temp or low grade temp. I went ahead and took him to the doctor, just to make sure it wasn’t strep and to get a doctor’s excuse expecting him to go back to school on Wednesday. No swabs, just exam…it is a virus. We go home. Wednesday morning he awoke very disoriented and confused, rambling about being accused of something by people who weren’t even there…yes, very bazarre and scarey. I immediately checked his temp and it was 104! I gave him 2 ibuprophen and got him in a tepid bath, then call the doctor. The nurse got me an appointment and we were back at the doctor’s office. This time he was swabbed for the flu, strep and they did blood work (CBC, Mono test and Blood chem). The quick tests were negative for flu and strep. The quick test for mono was also negative. The good news was that his WBC count was normal and his blood chemistry came back perfect! The Flu swab and the blood were sent off for full testing and we were sent home again being told it was a virus, etc. Since Wednesday he has had peaks and valleys every day…some times he looks and even feels better. Other times he is running a high temp and looks like death. He still has a sore throat and now has a very nagging cough. This is the 7th day…and we see no end in sight! Is this another flu strain that the test didn’t pick up? Am I missing something? No one else in the family is sick…I hope it stays that way and I’m ready for my man to be back to normal.

Started about a week ago-first night fever/achy/chills with a slight cough, next day seemed ok just a little fatigued but able to work, that night hit hard again with same symptoms, cough worse- lungs would fill up every time I tried to lay down-almost no sleep that night-insane coughing-called in sick to work next day-next day better during day-then cough starts up again at night-still having hard time lying down—off next 2 days hope to get some rest and kick it for good. Get well to all

(27) JAN says:

Had the flu shot back in the fall. No health concerns until last week. Started sneezing a lot and took it for spring allergies starting early (certain trees are flowering around here in Atlanta already). After about a week of just sneezing it has turned into a strange mix of nose drainage (excessive but clear like a sinus infection or allergies), extreme dizziness, temperature going up and then going down, constantly (today ranged from 95 to 98.2 and I am hypothyroid and always have been normal around 97.2 or so), feeling hot and freezing cold alternatively, and stomach upset and not being very hungry. Not being one for OTC remedies, I am just hoping it all goes away ASAP. Luckily no sore throat (always the worst part of viruses in my opinion) so far, knock on wood.

43 year-old healthy female…5 days ago sudden onset of fatigue, a mild fever (99.9), chills, and just all around feeling of blah. Next morning, went ahead and went to work….just felt weak & had chills here and there, so I moved a little slower than usual. I went to my son’s baseball practice after work and was standing against the wall watching him. A MAJOR dizziness spell~ thank goodness I was leaning against a wall…I slid down the wall and sat my butt down. I went ahead and went to work the next day…knowing I probably shouldn’t…felt a little weak and “out of it”…just moved slower than usual. Hour by hour I started to feel much worse to where I couldn’t even lift my arms…major fatigue, nausea, shoulder and arms were just BURNING with pain. I went home sick (Thursday). Thursday night, probably the worse…ENTIRE BODY ACHED…felt like I was 2,000 years old. Didn’t go to work Friday…Saturday, no energy, in bed most of the day. Sunday (Feb 26), felt better…caught up on cleaning!! (Shouldn’t have).. Sunday night…omgosh, the dizziness returned and I couldn’t sleep…was beginning to wonder if I have something else…! I never call out of work, but I did again today, (Monday, Feb 27)….light headed/dizziness and a feeling that I better go lay down!

50 year old female with asthma. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday I noticed that all my muscles ached and I was so tired. It hit me really fast. Went to lie on the couch and my teeth were chattering for 15 minutes. My son covered me with 6 blankets, I could not get warm. Temp was 102.4, little appetite. Was on couch all day Sunday coughing up mucus from my lungs, once there was even blood tinged mucus, bad headache, muscle aches, nasal congestion, got the chills again and temp shot up to 102, no appetite, jaw muscles hurt anyway. Today, Monday, feeling a bit better. This is my first sick day from work in about 15 years. Nasal congestion again and coughing up stuff from lungs, no energy, diarrhea, temp is normal. I’d rather be busting my behind at work than to be home with this flu!

This came on suddenly this past saturday night. Fever up to 102,pain in the chest, dizziness, slight cough, mild sore throat, muscle pain but an overall feeling of extreme tiredness and achiness.
Lots of tylenol brings fever down but once it wears off the fever is right back up to the 101 range.

33 y/o female: Damn! on day 5 of this flu from hell..literally it’s gotta be from hell. It started friday with a dry, mild cough, woke up on saturday with a mild sore throat, by 10 PM that night i had a high fever, chest congestion, but no head congestion and it felt like my sinsues and throat were on fire! i’m talking like i just ate a ghost pepper sorta fire. got the body aches sunday, monday and tues…today the only aches i have is soreness of my gums, teeth, head and sinuses. I suggest using an ice pack it really helps. Last night i literally slept with on on my pillow under my head..it helps with the swelling. My head still feels like it’s going to explode everytime i cough…i now have head congestion but mainly at night. still run a low temp only at night though. the symptoms seem to get worse at night, even though i am propped up on pillows so im not laying flat..the fever seems to come on when the sun goes down.

this is srsly the worse sickness i have had in a long time. It’s the burning of the sinuses that is really getting to me. the only thing i’ve found to help that is an ice pack.

I’m on day 4 of my symptoms. Started Monday morning with a sore throat, urge to clear my throat constantly, sinus pressure and headache and THICK post nasal drip, I thought it was all allergies because the pollen counts are so high here in St. Louis due to the mild winter, or I thought I had a mild laryngitis. Went to work and the sore throat just got worse. Went home that night and collapsed on the couch, I felt like I got hit by a bus. Tuesday was about the same but then I started to develop some shortness of breath if I walked too fast or went up just one flight of stairs. My voice started getting hoarse and started to get a really deep non-productive cough, still went to work and I could feel the symptoms getting worse as the day went on. For the past two days I have been sitting at my desk in front of a space heater because I cannot seem to stay warm (mind you the past two days here have been 65+). Today is Thurday, my chest hurts and now I can feel the mucus rattling in my chest and I can’t seem to cough it up, it feels like it gets stuck, still short of breath (now with just talking) and my voice is nonexistent. The fatigue is getting a little better, but I have not eaten a good meal since Sunday and have lost about 5 lbs. I have NO appetite. Not sure if I have a fever (my 4 mo old puppy ate my thermometer) but the chills when it’s so warm makes me wonder. I am 28 and have NEVER had the flu ever in my life. I just want it to go away!!!

46 yr old female in Toronto Canada. Out doing errands all yesterday (3/3)) until arriving home around 3.30 feeling achy and nauseous. Went to bed and didn’t get up. Achy muscles, headache, stomachs pain, waves of nauseous, fever 101. No appetite – very unusual for me. Finally caved on meds around 11pm. Hard to distinguish some pain symptoms as still in postMVA mode, just 6 wks. Slept ok till around 4.30. Aches creeping back. And then the diarrhea started. No sore throat or coughing. Fingers crossed that stuff stopped at the border! Kids have been fighting something too, but only symptoms have been occasional stomach aches and loose BMs. Now hubby has sore throat and general feeling of crappiness. None of us took flu shots. Good thing brought the computer home. Don’t want to contribute to the office-mates getting sick. But praying it is a quick pass.

Mine started with a monster headache…same for my husband also. I felt extremely tired the first time, then had chills which turned to fever for about 4 days. My husband’s chills/fever lasted for a week. Once my chills subsided, I started getting back pain and a stiff neck. It’s been 6 days now and I still have a stiff neck and my lower back really hurts. I’ve got an enlarged lymph node on my neck, still very tired, and pain in my joints on my left side (ankle, knee, and thumb). I also got a burning sensation in the skin all over my back for about 2 days. My husband’s arms and legs are starting to itch/burn. It is Sunday now and I am going to go to the doctor tomorrow. My husband is going back as well. Not really sure if this is the flu, but has been downright awful. I hate being tired all the time and my husband has missed a lot of work. We are in Indiana.

I started on a Friday morning having an itchy nose all day took some benadryl thinking it was only allergies and then started at the same time with that itchy feeling on the inside of the mouth so I kind of knew I was gonna get sick since I have low immune system. When night time came I started to sneeze continuously until I went to bed my nose started to run like an open faucet. I had the chills, I was very cold, my body ached so much, I couldn’t hear and I felt like I couldn’t breathe and on top of that I’m asthmatic. All through the night I couldn’t sleep, I had a high fever barely made it out of bed to the bathroom and started vomiting so my husband took me to the ER and then I stood there until Sunday cuz I really didn’t want to stay there again for another 2 weeks since I’ve been through this before. So I had the H1N1 and I came home without my release and started taking my fluids again until I got better. Not 100% but better than the other days. And now I’m returning back to work tomorrow Tuesday.

Washington State, day 10 of illness. Started late on a Saturday night with heavy chest pain and urge to cough deep. Next day fever, chills, fatigue, more coughing. By Tuesday went to the doc to get lungs checked, feeling half dead! He did blood tests and x-rays and decided to treat me for viral pneumonia (though he was wrong about x-ray) with azith and an expectorant. No appetite, abx made me sick too. Still no energy or appetite by day 8 but went back to work day nine, still experiencing some chills, fatigue and low appetite though cough is finally looser and less painful. Also used loratadine throughout to try to stay less mucousy. Best of luck!!

Started last Saturday, this is Tuesday. I was feeling exhausted, went to bed at 7:00 pm but body aches were so bad I didn’t sleep more than thirty minutes at a time. The next day I had little appetite. Continuing bad headaches and body aches, exhaustion. Woke up Monday determined to go to work. I had a slight sore throat. By the time I got to work the cough and congestion had started. I made a doctor’s appointment. I had a low grade fever. Got something for the cough to help me sleep. By the time I got home my head and nose were so congested I couldn’t breath through my nose; I was miserable. Thank God I remembered my Netti pot. I used it and it cleared my nose up enough so that I could breathe through my nose somewhat.

Stayed home from work today and I am still feeling lousy. Low appetite, congested, cough and sore throat. I hate to take another day off work. I’m not sure what I will do. This is horrible.

Wen’t to Vegas last weekend and returned Home with the Flu….
It started with a bad headache and feeling tired, i thought it was from the trip but later that night the body aches came on very strong, had to lay with a heating pad, then the coughing and tightness in my chest started in…
I was so sleepy but I tossed and turn with pain running through my legs and arms. i was running a very high fever for about 3 hours, I kept taking a cool rag over my arms and face and started drinking ice cold gatorade took some tylenol and finally broke the fever. then i slept all day, woke up and vomited then, fell back to sleep for another 4 hours, all in all i slept for two days straight, by the 3rd day body aches let up, but headache, cough, and fatigue, still hanging on. Starting to cough up alot of yellow stuff.

I hope these posters are getting their stuff check by a Dr. and not just self diagnosing. I have potential sinus infections, possible pneumonia, and other issues. Stick to the symptoms that are flue related. If you sinus and teeth hurt, or your ears are contested see a Dr. and make sure it’s not an infection. If your doc says you have pneumonia, you probably do. Pneumonia can come from a bacterial or viral infection and doesn’t have to come from influenza. Part of flu season is hysteria and miss information, check your facts and see your Dr. =)

Now how did I find this page … I’m checking my facts, symptoms are classic influenza – Fever, Exhaustion/Fatigue, Body Aches, Headache, Cough, Congestion, Up and down fever started at 103 down to normal and then back up (which is not necessarily influenza but started to make me wonder) whole family has it now. Going to get tested Monday if it’s not cleared up, by then we’ll be 3 to 7 days into it depending on the person. Returning fever and symptoms on the first person infected makes me wonder if it’s the flu … I guess we’ll see. Mind you duration posted by the CDC is like 2 days to 2 weeks.

Started having minor sore throat a week ago Sunday. Had aches, mostly back and head tingled and hurt. No other symptoms other than lack of appetite. Stayed in bed all day Monday. Gradually started to gain back energy through rest of week, Friday felt back to 100%. Then bam! Sat got it all back again. aches, sli headache, no appetite, maybe slight fever.Sunday, trying to decide if I feel like getting out of bed. Got flu shot – maybe that’s why symptoms aren’t so bad. How long will thisi last?

(55 w/ Rheumatoid Arthritis on immune suppressives) Two or three weeks ago I had a dry cough like crazy. I never get respiratory illnesses. I figured it was allergies when my nose started to drip. Just irritating. Last Monday I started feeling icky. Very generalized fatigue, headache, imbalance issues. Thursday at work, the headache got much worse, neck ache like crazy and mild nausea. Stopped twice on my way home to upchuck. Since then I’ve had nonstop body aches, headache, neck ache, nausea and FATIGUE. Any effort causes me to be very dizzy and out of breath. My bp has been running high for me and my pulse around 100 at rest. I’ve been trying to drink and eat soups. The profuse perspiration and dizziness are the worst aspects, not that the vomiting and diarrhea are any fun. I can’t wait for this to be over. I’ve been taking Tylenol for the aches but nothing else.

Flu shots don’t work! Keep your immune system healthy and your body will battle what nature throws at it and then you will create your own immunities to things. Too many shots and too many antibiotics is why so many people are not healthy and catch everything.

These last 3 months have had to be the worst in my life! I originally started having problems with allergies in January which then turned into bronchitis but early February. As I was getting over it, my son came home from daycare with a bug and I immediately got sick again. By mid February, bronchitis had then turned to walking pneumonia. Again, I had finally started to get over that when my son came home Friday and appeared fine. By Saturday morning, he had a temp of 105.1. By Saturday afternoon my husband started complaining of a sore throat, dry cough and chills. My son also had a sore throat and his eyes were hurting. So I took care of them but by Sunday morning my asthma started to really bother me. I couldn’t stop coughing and I had a fever of 101.7. Still thought it was only a food until my fever started to alternate with chills and my entire body began to ache. It is now Monday and I’m exhausted, easily winded and I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus. Now my stomach has started to gloat and I have a ton of gas and feel queasy. I have an appointment with the doc tomorrow

This has got to be the WORST flu I’ve had in over four years! I get a flu shot every year because I work in a hospital, so I rarely catch it. But not this year… Woke up feeling like I was getting a cold, and then spiked a fever within about four hours. High fever lasted two days despite taking acetominophen, along with all the other wonderful symptoms – chills, night sweats, extreme body ache, pounding headache, raw throat, sinus congestion, ear ache, no voice… I stayed home from work for an entire week, something I’ve NEVER done! All I wanted to do was lay around and do nothing. The exhaustion was and still is horrible. Seven days later, I still have no voice, a raw throat, sinus congestion and I’m extremely tired.
The flu this year has been horrible and seeminly extremely contageous! Half my office was out sick in one week.

I’m dizzy, I have a fever but low grade, splitting headache, extreme fatigue….it’s hard to get up and walk to the kitchen. I have had loose stools a few times, a horrible taste in my mouth, and no appetite and nausea. I think I may have the flu but don’t know anyone that has had it. This is horrible, I hope I’m not gonna feel this achy for much longer. I’m so out of it I can carry a conversation on with anyone. UGH!!!!

Really strong bronchitis. Went back to the Doc because I have history of pneumonia and pleurisy. He said my lungs were clear and gave me a stronger expectorant. Two days later, mucous turned green. Went back to the Doc and he gave me antibiotics. Took first one today. It has been 12 days since the first symptoms. The fever and chills and fatigue thing seems to come in waves.

Male 50 years old. I was at work (3rd shift) and walked outside to get some fresh air and it hit me like all natural disasters combined. I was shaking so bad I had to leave work. I went home and slept 24 hours straight ( I have never done that) . I woke once long enough to take my temperature and it was 104.

I felt tremendous after waking from my coma like sleep. I felt a little weak in the second 24 hours, and am feeling almost back to normal in the 3rd day.

I sanitized my house (trying to protect my family) from top to bottom and opened all windows airing everything out. Washed all linens twice.

I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I am glad to see it gone. Quick, furious and not FUN.

But add the congestion, started coughing up the yucky stuff. So I’m on day 3 woke up weak! I just knew I’d be at least 80% so here I lay in bed googling another symptom, y does my body hurt. Saturday of last weekend I went to the ER and was given antibiotics for a UTI. The next day(Sunday) I started to have an itchy nose and throat and sneezing. I figured that it was just allergies so I took an antihistamine. Then my nose started to alternate between runny and stuffy and I had the nasty post-nasal drip constantly draining, a scratchy feeling in my throat, and muscle weakness. I was also running a fever. On Thursday morning the alternating runny and stuffy nose were still there along with post-nasal drip and scratchy feeling in my throat. I woke up with a sour feeling stomach, nausea, and immediately began vomiting. I figured that was due to the post-nasal drip that seemed to be never ending, lots of clear boogers when I blow my nose. Sinus pain too. I have no appetite. I have only slept 5 hours in the past 2 days. It is now Friday morning and I still have stuffy/runny nose, post-nasal drip, scratchy feeling in my throat, muscle weakness, no appetite, and it feels like I have a lot of mucus in my chest but I don’t have a cough. I have a huge exam today worth 40% of my grade and I feel absolutely horrible and do not want to go to school but our teacher does not allow makeups. I told my teacher that I was sick. She said unless I am hospitalized or need emergency surgery I will NOT be allowed to make up the test. So, basically I’m going to possibly be infecting 45+ other people with the flu today. I really rather stay home but I don’t want to fail. This sucks.

Monday night went to bed with a strange feeling, woke up tues with a dry ongoing  cough and body aches with tempature sensitivity, coughed all day and by night knew it was something serious, not allergies. wednesday morning awoke multiple times in sweats and fever and with chills. Very strong. By morning I was exhausted. Went to work at 9  and was sent home by 1030.
Never been so sick that I would seem to loss conscienceless as I slept. All afternoon cried from the aches and sweats. I could not stand up, ( ive never not been able to stand up!!!) My upper back was in a very tight squeeze and sore. Horrible headache.  Coughing finally became productive and nose began to run and sneeze.
Thursday. Awoke feeling a bit better, until I tried to go to the bathroom. I was just as sick, had not eaten a single thing since two days ago and food sill was not an appetizing idea. I drank soy milk and crashed back down hoping to feel better. But even after that nap, and getting two hours of reprive from symptoms. After I ate soup, the symptoms came back, unable to get warm and chills with heat waves.
I really hope tomorrow I feel better cough medicine does not work. My skin is standing on edge, super sensitive.  Ugh.

Body aches and headaches I attributed to the constant coughing. So tired and unable to sleep due to it.
Next day went to Dr as was short of breath with the least excertion.
Anti-biotics.
It’s day 3 now and finally got some sleep as Anti-biotics have started to kick in. That and a lot of tylenol. I’m still coughing but it’s not as bad and my chest is starting to break up Yuk greenish mucous.

DAYS 1 THROUGH 4 I had a temp of 101°. Extremely bad sore throat (all the way down to my chest). Ears burn too. Could only stand up long enough to get something to drink. Clear, thick, abundant mucus from nose. Couldn’t cough up the mucus I felt in my vocal cords (no voice too). Chest hurting. Clothing felt like it was scraping my skin. Bones & makes hurt. Headache.
Day 5- coughed up brown-green chunk of mucus. Now I can talk. I sounds like a man when I do talk. More still in there, it is looser now. Throat still burns, ears too. No fever or aches. Mucus from nose a little more milky looking and thicker. No headache but, oh, the vertigo has got to go! Exhausted too.
I DID GET MY FLU SHOT, November 2011.
The last time I had the flu was in 1995.
It was much much worse that time. I was in the ER with an IV and 2 bags of fluids they pushed into me (103 temp).
I was also not able to move out of the bed for a solid week!

But I’m on the upswing from this flu…I can feel it! :)

(70) Scott says:

(69) Mikey… I can identify with your pain in one of my legs (left) and my lower back as well. It didn’t start until I knew I was already ill. It’s not painful like you say, just dull and really annoying, almost like growing pains in a way.

Monday May 14th, I woke up for work like normal, but with a tickle in my throat. Thought nothing of it, as I can work through a cold, and since it was the first sign of anything, I took some preventative remedies like echinacea and the like, and set about my day. As it progressed, I felt the need to cough now and again, but it was a dry type, like trying to clear a hair from the back of my mouth. Other than that I felt fine. Tuesday was a different story. After working most of the day, I had begun to feel quite awful in general; fatigued, headache, stuffy nose, body ache… so I left an hour early and went home to rest. That’s when the real fun started. About 2 hours after climbing into bed to rest, I literally had to run for the bathroom. It was coming out both ends, thank goodness for having emptied the bathroom trash can earlier, It was being filled back up quickly! But all that seemed temporary, as it subsided and I felt a whole lot better afterwards. So I went to work the next day, still feeling ‘off’ but alright enough to work, or so I thought. By the time I arrived, I was as green as a lime and ended up falling backwards out of one of the prototype vehicles I’m in the middle of designing. Everyone said as much as told me to forget the project for now, go home. I managed to stay for a meeting regarding the project and then left, buying meds and a digital thermometer on the way home, only to find that I was already sporting a fever of 99.8F and climbing rapidly.

May 20, 2012 at 1:02 pm
(71) Scott says:

After 3 hours it was at 102.8F. I awoke in the middle of the night from weird dreams/nightmares – like a gas mask hanging from the ceiling watching me while my couch cushions erupted upwards and then froze in midair like time had suddenly stopped – and I was SOAKED in sweat and freezing. I took my temp again and it was now 104.3F. I changed sheets and dried off, but could only sleep in 15 min. increments for the same reasons. Since then I have not slept more than 1/2 hour max at a time, and water is the only thing I’ve been able to hold down. I haven’t been back to work since. My mother is a top level RN, and gave me gravol for day time nausea, Maxeran for night, and Temazepam for sleep aid. Last night was the first time in 4 days that I’ve slept for hours at a time. After several days at high fever, I was relieved to see that it may have finally broken as this morning it read 99.8F. I am still really not well however, quite weak, have the odd bout of nausea and still have a nasty headache. My abdomen has since become quite painful though, mainly when I cough or move suddenly. There is also the lethargy and lack of appetite to contend with as well.

To anyone suffering this influenza, I feel for you. I am naturally a very healthy and active person, with a great immune response and I even heal from physical wounds with a speed many compare to ‘Superman’. This bug devastated me, and the only thing I can compare it to was when I had Mononucleosis as a child. No other flu or bug has ever been this awful on me. Get lots of rest, drink LOTS of water and I hope it spares you the horrors I’ve been through. Longest week of my life since Mono (3 month on that one, it was mild but it’s also much more serious than a flu).

It’s May in London……but it is like winter coats hats heating on endless rain and grey skies….I have had this absolutely awful flu/virus, dizzy, hot and cold feeling just really weird and this unbelievable sleepiness, where l literally can’t stay awake l have had it for over 10 days, sometimes when l am at home l think it has gone and then after an hour if l do something it comes back in waves of this weird dizzy spacial thing and then aches and pain, slight nausea, last week l had a headache for 5 days that moved from one side of my head to another, the weakness and general malaise is truly awful because you don’t know when it will end, my Dr. told me to rest for another week, and not to expect to feel better until at least friday………that will make it over 2 weeks!!What can l do to get rid of this thing it is depressing and you just can’t do anything and kind of embarrassing as people say are you still not better……..!!I am wondering if l should go into hosptial so l can rest without doing things around my home……I am at my wit’s end……any advice??Does anyone else has this?

I guess my symptoms are more like Gail Berrys: I started out with intestinal upset last week, but didn’t think too much of it…..that was for 2 days……next day I awoke with the room spinning, so I got up (that usually helps as occassionally this happens to me and a lot of times it’s just sinuses that I can get rid of pretty easily)…………went about another day…..the next morning I awoke wondering which Mac Truck hit me? Even my skin hurt. Ached all over, sore throat, cough that I thought would take my head off, and I knew I had a temp…..too sick to take it. When my stomach could tolerate, I took Ibuprophen just to be able to move. After about the 3rd day, I took my temp……with ibuprophen it was 100. Absolutely NO APPETITE….kind of queesy off and on. Drank tea, water, and 7 up (that unbelievably upset my stomach) Cough is bad, but not constant…..I can feel and sometimes hear the fluid rolling around in there and sometimes productive, sometimes not.

This is day number 5. I can say that I feel SOMEWHAT better than the first few days, but not a lot. At least I’m up and about……eyes still burning and this morning I still have a temp of 99 but that’s without any ibuprophen or aspirin, so hey, maybe I will live. I guess my question is like everyone else’s …….when will this thing decide to vamoos.
