Cold Meds Not For Young Children

Thursday September 11, 2008

Did you know that you shouldn't be giving your kids under 2 years old any type of cold or cough medication? In October of 2007, these medications were taken off the market, but many parents still have them at home and are unaware that the products are not only not effective but may also be dangerous.

There was enough evidence that these products are of no benefit to young children - actually kids under 6 - that the FDA is recommending that they not be used in children in this age group. And because there were significant reports of unintentional overdoses and other negative outcomes in kids under 2, they were taken off the market completely. This includes all over the counter cold and cough medications, but not medications that just treat pain and fever such as regular Tylenol or Motrin.
