Peanut Butter Recalled Due to Salmonella
The FDA has recalled all jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter that have a number beginning with 2111 on the lid. These jars of peanut butter may be contaminated with Salmonella. All of the affected jars were manufactured at a plant in Georgia and have been sold in stores since May 2006.
This notice comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked 288 cases in 39 states of food borne illnesses to these products.
Symptoms of salmonella include fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. The symptoms are very similar to those of the stomach flu and rotavirus.
Typically, salmonella will run it's course within a couple of weeks, but you should contact your doctor if you suspect that you have it. Your doctor can run tests to determine if you actually have salmonella and can then report the case to the CDC.
Some people, especially those with weakened immune systems and young children, can die from salmonella. If you have any of the affected product, throw it away immediately and contact your doctor if you have any symptoms of salmonella and you have eaten the peanut butter in the last three days.
